The purpose of the Tyngsborough Public Schools Professional Development Plan is to provide staff development by which educators acquire or enhance the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs necessary to create high levels of learning for all students. Staff development has traditionally been synonymous with workshops, courses, and presentations by “experts.” Today, we know that professional learning can take many forms and draws on the perspectives, talents, and contributions of K-12 educators, higher education personnel, and individuals who serve in various other roles.
As the professional development committee members began the process of developing the district Professional Development plan, they looked for guidance from the National Staff Development Council’s Standards for Staff Development. These standards recognize that sustained, intellectually rigorous professional development is essential for everyone who affects student learning. This includes teachers, school committee members, district administrators, principals, teachers and support staff. These standards recognize that professional development is a significant responsibility of all educational leaders.
